Eco Outsource: green business success for Joanne
New mum, Joanne Upton from Helston, has launched an exciting new green business venture that is transforming the way Cornish businesses approach their environmental efforts.
Eco Outsource, launched earlier this year, is a new green consultancy offering environmental support to small and medium sized enterprises across the county. Joanne took the brave step to start the business after receiving advice and support from ERDF Outset Cornwall.
Joanne says: “I am delighted with how Eco Outsource has grown and developed. The one thing I have learnt so far is that people genuinely want you to succeed, it’s a fantastic feeling.”
Joanne was made redundant while on maternity leave and until she found Outset was struggling to find a job in the field that she feels passionate about.
“Joanne is totally committed to Eco Outsource and has worked hard on developing a business model that is able to provide on-going support to SME’s.” Says Pam Sekula, Lead Enterprise Coach for Outset Cornwall, who has enjoyed working with Joanne over the last 6 months and is confident that Eco Outsource will be a success.
Joanne says “There are challenging times ahead for business, economic downturn aside, the Government has set demanding carbon reduction targets which will eventually impact on all businesses, including SME’s”.
Joanne has now been accepted onto the Unlocking Cornish Potential (UCP) Graduate Start-up Program. UCP is a Combined Universities in Cornwall programme, managed by Cornwall College and receives ESF (European Social Fund) Convergence investment. Until September 2013, they are recruiting graduates living in Cornwall who have an exciting idea for a high growth business. Applicants are chosen through a rigorous selection panel including an Open Day and Boot Camp. Successful graduates such as Joanne are offered a financial support package; bespoke business skills training; 40 hours of mentoring from industry experts; organised events and networking opportunities as well as regular meetings and advice from an experienced business coach.
Joanne’s UCP Business Development Manager is Colin Milroy who specialises in the environmental sector. He has high hopes for Eco Outsource:
Colin says: “Implementing positive environmental change through the specialist consultancy that Eco Outsource offers provides the sort of competitive advantage that all future successful businesses need. I’m sure Eco Outsource will be around for years to come”.
Joanne lives in Helston, with her husband Wesley who is in the Royal Navy and her one-year old son.
